René-Maurice Gattefossé is, quite rightly, seen as the inventor and father of modern Western aromatherapy, but few people know that during the First World War, he developed Salvol, an “aromatic medication” that was successfully tested in military hospitals. The Gattefossé Foundation continued his efforts in raising awareness of aromatherapy in a hospital environment, with the aim of establishing the use of essential oils as an indispensable complementary therapy to pharmacology and conventional medicine.
