Gattefossé may have started out as a small business based in Lyon, but even back then, the company engaged in international trade. While working in perfumery, Louis Gattefossé was quick to source the best raw materials from overseas, often far-flung places. Throughout the 1920s, René-Maurice imported essential oils from Madagascar, the United States and Japan, and its perfumery formulae were translated into lots of different languages! Exports then increased steadily. However, from the 1980s onwards, the company began to open subsidiaries and that is what lead to a dramatic increase in the development of Gattefossé across the world.
